Prefix commands

Type slash commands as a message - !ban, !mute, !rank, !remind and more. Off until you switch it on.

Some people are faster typing !timeout @Max 10m flooding than filling in a slash command. With prefix commands switched on, most of Pangobot's slash commands can also be typed as a message. A typed command is the slash command: the same checks, the same answers, the same entries in your logs and cases.

Switching it on

  1. Open the dashboard, then Settings (General settings).
  2. Under Text commands, check the Prefix (! unless you changed it) and switch on Prefix commands.
  3. Save. Typed commands work at once, in every channel where the slash command may be used.
It is off on every server until somebody switches it on. Many servers have other bots on ! - with both answering the same message, members get two replies.

The commands

<required> [optional]. The words in brackets are the slash command's options.

A command whose module is switched off on your server answers that it is off - as the slash command does.

Slash only, on purpose: what has to stay private and cannot as a message - /report, /redeem (a key in the channel), /note, /history, /case, /userinfo (a timeout's end for moderators), /invites who (the invite code for managers) and /search (results AutoMod would stop are shown only to the member) - and what needs forms or menus: /giveaway, /game, /sendmessage, plus AI Help's /ask and /summarize.

How a typed command is read

  • The order: the member or channel first, then numbers, times and choices, and the free text (a reason, a note) last - whatever order the slash command shows. !ban @Max 7d 1 posting invites is a ban for seven days that removes one day of messages.
  • Members by mention (@Max) or by ID - also for !ban, where somebody who already left can be banned by ID. Channels by mention (#general) or ID.
  • Or as a reply: answer a member's message with the command and leave the member out - !mute 10m spamming as a reply times out the author of that message. A member named in the command wins over the reply. Not for !purge, whose member is a filter you name on purpose.
  • A timeout without a duration lasts 28 days: Discord has no timeout without an end, and 28 days is the longest it allows. The answer says so - also for /timeout.
  • Times like 30s, 10m, 2h, 7d, 1w or combined: 1d12h.
  • Switches like bots in !purge: write the option's name (!purge 50 bots) or yes/no.
  • Choices as listed: !slowmode 30s, !slowmode off.
  • A command that cannot be read gets a short usage line with what was wrong - "amount has to be between 1 and 100", "There is no user with the ID …" - and does nothing.

Who may use them where

Exactly who may use the slash command. That is the command's default permission (/ban needs Ban Members, /timeout needs Timeout Members ...) and whatever you set under Server Settings > Integrations > Pangobot: for single commands or the whole bot, for roles, members and channels. If /ban is only allowed in #mod-chat, so is !ban.

  • Pangobot asks Discord for these rules and keeps them for two minutes; when you change them, Discord tells Pangobot and the change counts at once.
  • If Discord cannot be asked, a typed command is refused ("Pangobot could not check who may use this command here") - a rule nobody can check is never skipped. The slash command still works.
  • Administrators and the server owner are held to these rules for typed commands too. If one of them is shut out by a rule there, the slash command is their way.
  • The modules' own checks come on top, as for the slash command: Moderation's immune roles and its role hierarchy rules, for example.

What is different from the slash command

  • No private answers. An answer only the member should see - a refusal, a usage line, an error - is a reply in the channel that removes itself after 20 seconds.
  • The typed message goes too, 20 seconds later, so the channel stays readable - not a !lock, !unlock, !slowmode or !afk, which everybody in the channel should see. Pangobot needs Manage Messages in that channel for it; without it, the message simply stays.
  • No forms. Where the slash command would open a form, the typed one points to the slash command.
  • **!purge removes itself first**, so !purge 10 removes ten other messages.
  • Your own commands win. A Custom Command with the same name (!kick for a joke) answers instead.
  • Three typed commands in ten seconds per member at most.
  • The typed message is an ordinary message: AutoMod sees it. When Pangobot takes it away afterwards, your message log leaves that out - what the command did (a ban, a timeout and its case) is logged as usual.
  • A reply never pings the member who typed the command, and never a role or @everyone written into a reason.

Nothing happens

  • Is Prefix commands switched on, and does the message start with your server's prefix?
  • Is there a Custom Command with the same name? It answers instead.
  • Did the member type more than three commands in ten seconds?
  • Is your server served by a bot of your own? Then typed commands answer through that bot, as the slash commands do.
  • "You cannot use !… here": the rules under Server Settings > Integrations do not allow that member this command in this channel.
